The eighth mistake.
8. Overpaying for homeowners insurance coverage!
Are you overpaying? Most people really do not know. Do you? Homeowners insurance coverage should be carefully matched to the value of your home, and the amount of the mortgage you have. Make sure the coverage does not drop below the cost to replace your home and or pay off your mortgage.
Because your insurance company sends the bill for your homeowners insurance directly to the lender each year (in most cases). The insurance company can, each year, increase the amount of coverage and the premium, under the pretence that the value has gone up. However, if your house burns to the ground and you have to replace the entire house, you will not have to replace the land, the foundation and the water or sewer taps. So why are they always insured?
A wise man once said: "If you watch the pennies, the dollars will take care of themselves."
That is good advice because it adds up to a lot of money over time.
